The Department of Electrical Engineering offers a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Electrical Engineering, a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Electrical Engineering
The purpose of the Ph.D. preliminary examination is to screen candidates for continuation in the doctoral program. The exam is administered by the Graduate Committee, and is combined with the M.S. Comprehensive Exam. A Ph.D. candidate is required to pass the exam at the Ph.D. level. To do this, a student must typically get a higher score than what is necessary to pass at the M.S. level.
Ph.D. students must pass all five questions at the Ph.D. level in order to successfully pass the exam. Ph.D. students who do not pass at the Ph.D. on their first attempt may take the exam a second time.
M.S. students must pass all five questions at the M. s. level to successfully pass the all exams on the first attempt have the option of retaking the exam or changing to the thesis option.
