The MA degree is not offered as a terminal or stand-alone graduate degree in economics. Only PhD students who discontinue work toward their doctorate are eligible to terminate their studies with the MA degree.The PhD program in Economics provides in-depth, rigorous training in economic theory and econometrics. Most entering students are aiming for careers as professors in research-oriented universities, with some students interested in research-oriented positions in private industry, consulting, and government. The department also provides students with mentoring in teaching and numerous opportunities to teach undergraduate students
