TOEFL TOEFL scores are not accepted for admission to DMSE. IELTS International applicants whose first language is not English (this includes applicants currently enrolled in U.S. institutions) must present evidence of their ability to carry on their studies in English. Such applicants must take the IELTS. The IELTS requirement will be waived (1) for students who have attended schools that provide instruction primarily in English or (2) for students who have been in the U.S. for 3 years and will have received a degree from an American institution before entering MIT. Include a statement requesting the waiver in the supplemental materials page on the online application. A minimum score of 7.0 for the IELTS is required. Official IELTS scores must be sent by the testing service to this Department before the application will be acted on. Photocopies of IELTS scores will not be accepted. GRE The GRE General Test is required for all applicants for admission to the Department. Only the general portion of the GRE is considered. Test scores should be sent directly to MIT from ETS. Photocopies of GRE scores will not be accepted. Official GRE scores should be sent by the testing service to this Department. GRE scores are valid for 5 years.
