TOEFL
Official report of scores achieved on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for all international applicants whose native language is not English. The Graduate School requires a minimum score of 80 on the iBT TOEFL or equivalent. To be awarded a Teaching Assistantship, applicants must have achieved a 92 on the iBT TOEFL or equivalent. Applicants with iBT TOEFL scores below 80 or equivalent will be required to take English language training. IELTS and Pearson PTE Academic English proficiency scores are accepted on a case-by-case basis. (IELTS: Minimum 6.5 for admission and minimum 7.0 to receive a teaching assistantship; Pearson: Minimum 55 for admission and minimum 65 to receive a teaching assistantship).

Ph.D. applicants also must provide a cover letter that states:1. The track and concentration desired (e.g. Mass Communication with a concentration in History);2. A rationale for the applicant to pursue a degree that synthesizes these disciplines (i.e., answer “Why Mass Comm. & History?” and indicate the kind of research projects the applicant wishes to pursue, including possible topics and approaches);3. An explanation of the applicant’s background in his or her major track and in the concentration.

Three letters of recommendation are required.
Transcript
Official transcripts of completed coursework. One official transcript of all previous college or university work must be submitted directly from the previous institution to our office. We will obtain all transcripts from the University of Maine System campuses.
