The essay is another important tool that we use in our decision making process. We look for a thoughtful statement of purpose that shows signs of creativity and a potential for research. The statement must be convincing and coherent, based on some familiarity with the proposed area of research. It is often helpful if you can relate your research and interests to the research of specific faculty and groups at Princeton.
In writing your essay, you might want to keep in mind that we are mainly interested in your interest in physics and in your undergraduate experience in physics or related subjects (math, engineering, etc...). A list of questions you might want to address are given below. Feel free, however, to add any other information that you consider relevant.
a) What background in math, physics, or other sciences have you had that is beyond the usual curriculum of the physics major and that you think is important for us to know?
b) What research experiences have you had? If you have made important or original contributions, please explain what they are and, if relevant, how they have influenced your interest in physics.
c) Are you planning to do experimental or theoretical physics, or are you undecided? If your physics courses or research experience has influenced you in this decision, explain how.
d) What kinds of physics are you most interested in pursuing in graduate school, and why? What has influenced you in this decision?
e) The research program of our faculty is on the web. Give examples of groups and faculty with whom you might be interested in working.
f) What special aspects of your personality, talents, interests and skills make you think that you will be a good physicist?

We pay much attention to letters of recommendations by people who really know the candidate and can provide relevant information about the candidate's potential in physics. Recommendation letters should help us evaluate your capacity for research, a most important criterion for admission. If possible, choose recommenders who are familiar with the Graduate Physics Program at Princeton and can gauge your ability compared to previous Princeton students.
Transcript
Applicants must upload a transcript including the key from all colleges or universities that you have attended. An unofficial transcript must show the name of the student, name of the issuing institution, name of courses taken, and the grades received in those courses. Applicants with transcripts in languages other than English will need to upload an English translation along with such transcripts. If you have sealed copies of your transcript, open, scan, and upload them. Transcripts should be scanned in black and white at a maximum resolution of 300dpi and no larger than 10MB.
At the time of application, nothing needs to be mailed to the admission office. If you are offered admission and accept our offer, you will be required to have final official transcripts submitted from every college or university from which you have earned a degree. Please mail these materials to:
