TOEFL
For purposes of admission, your most recent score must be at least 90 for the Internet-based test (IBT). If is advised to take the TOEFL at least 60 days prior to the deadline. Inquiries about the TOEFL can be made on the TOEFL website or at toefl@ets.org. The institution code for Berkeley is 4833. There is no Department code for the TOEFL.
- Please note that if you send the tests with the wrong code, we will still receive the scores electronically from ETS. Even with the wrong code, if all of the other information is correct, we will be able to match up your scores to your application.
IELTS
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is also acceptable. The minimum acceptable score is 7 on a 9-point scale on your most recent exam. The oldest acceptable score is June 2014. More information about IELTS can be found on the IELTS website.
GRE
GRE Scores DEADLINE: Tuesday, January 6, 2017
- For Fall 2017, test taken before June 2011 will not be accepted.
- The GRE is required for all applicants, and is composed of three sections:
- Analytical writing
- Verbal reasoning
- Quantiative reasoning

Please limit your statement to 2 pages.
GPA
A minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.2 for bachelors and graduate degrees. International students should be in the top 5% of their class.
Fee
You must submit an application fee when you apply. The application fee is not re-fundable. If you are a U.S. citizen or current permanent resident, the application fee is $105; for all others, the fee is $125.
RL
The department requires three (3) letters of recommendation to be submitted online. We recommend these letters to be from persons who have supervised your research or academic work and who can evaluate your intellectual ability, creativity, leadership and potential. Letters from instructors with little knowledge of your abilities are not recommended.The submission of more than three letters is discouraged. Letters must be submitted electronically, and we encourage you to make your recommenders aware of this at an early stage.Reviews of applications begin once they are complete. You are thus encouraged to submit your application as early as possible, and to make every effort to assure that your letters of recommendation are submitted as early as possible, on or before the December 7th, 2015 application deadline. Keep in mind that we will not consider your application if it is not complete.
Transcript
You will need to upload unofficial transcripts with the online application for the initial review. If you are admitted, and if you enroll, the Graduate Division will require one official hard copy transcript from each college or university you have attended.
